heat pump make noise at startup or shutdown
I have a rental. Tenant said that some times, the outside heat pump makes noise at startup or shutdown. he said it doesn't always do that. In other words, it doesn't reproduce it.
based on my research, it appears that it maybe normal.
anyway, I want to go and take a look.
My first thing is to replace the capacitor.
what else should I look at if this thing doesn't reproduce it when I'm there?
thanks

It is normal to hear the reversing valve make this noise as it is releasing pressure when you turn the stat from Heat to Off or Cool.
The stat should keep the reversing valve in the heating position when it cycles off but is still in the Heat mode.
It will make the noise when defrost cycle is initiated.
Some heat pumps have a "Quiet Shift" dip switch setting in the outdoor unit.
