Fan kicks in and hot air blows before the compressor cuts on and blows cold air
The fan kicks on and blows hot air. It almost feels like the heat is on and you can smell that burning smell of dust. However, the compressor hasn't kicked on yet, so it is the emergency heat? Once the compressor kicks on, the unit starts blowing cold air as it should. We live in Virginia, it's only about 75 degrees outside (give or take). We have our thermostat set to 72. Maybe it's the thermostat? HELP!!!! My husband posted this same question on another forum! Help me win our bet and fix our Heat Pump at the same time!

New Info
OK.... When we turn everything off and just run the fan only, the heat is running... We're thinking it's the emergency heat or a contactor is stuck... Any quick fixes?

Welcome to the forums.
We need a make and complete model number of your furnace/air handler.
You may have several breakers feeding the furnace in which case you can temporarily shut off the largest breaker to the electric heat coils.
When you go to A/C mode.... the blower starts right up and how long does it taKe for the compressor to start running ?

Thanks for the info. Turns out, the heating coils are staying on so we cut the breaker for the coils on the air handler unit. We have a friend who can replace them.

You may have an issue with a defective sequencer.
