New Frigidaire FRA052XT7 window unit compressor will not come on at night.

Hi!

Ok, so I got a brand new window unit and while it cools fine during the day the compressor will not cycle on at all on cool-ish nights. It's not freezing up mind you, it's just not ever coming on to begin with; fan runs, no compressor/no cool. Is there some indoor/outdoor temp differentiation going on so that if it senses the air outside to be cool already it doesn't see the need? It's a drag because I have a small dorm room with an embarrassingly large plasma TV in it and the room gets uncomfortably warm at night without the AC, and my old fix - to simply open the window - is no longer an option as there's now an air conditioner in it! ;-) Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

It's possible that the outside temperature is low enough that the compressor isn't coming on to keep it from freezing up. However, if it is cool outside, you should be able to run just the fan to pull in cool air from outside. Most room A/C units have a lever or some way to control whether the unit recirculates the air or not. Normally, on a hot day when you have the A/C running, you would want to recirculate the air, so the unit isn't having to cool the hot, outside air (it will cool the already cooled inside air). However, when you want to use the unit as a fan, you should turn off the recirculate feature so that it's drawing it's air from the outside where it's cooler than the inside air.

Does the A/C have a lot of whistles & bells in an electronic " brain " .

If so , some parameter may need to be programed differently ?

God bless

That's a very basic 5K window unit. No vent or fresh air options. Manual type thermostat and function control.

From the operating manual........
Room temperature below 70.O F (21.O C). Cooling may not occur until room temperature rises above 70 F (21 C).
