Blower fan as whole house fan?

Here's a nutty question. Has anyone tried using a squirrel cage blower fan as a whole house fan? I have no attic space and was and the windows are 22 inches wide, so I was thinking of a blower fan (like the attached image), with a baffle, sized to the window opening, might do the trick. And, if that works, maybe even enclose the fan in an a mdf box (with holes of course) to add a layer of noise dampening. I welcome all and any suggestions.

It would work but not move anywhere as much air as a 24" or 30" whole house fan.

It works. But a AHU fan will not move enough air. You will need to step up to one of those floor fans. It still will not be like having a hole house fan but close.

Oh I see that you are in PA! I would not recommend this in green grass climates.

Wow, thanks for your quick replies. Currently, the only thing I have is a 20 inch box fan that I stick in the window. I guess my first goal is to cool down this 550 sq foot 3rd floor space. Since I can't fit one of those big, 20 inch Air King fans, I'm hoping there might an alternative. BTW, the blower says it moves about 4000 cfm vs. 3650 cfm the Air King which bills itself as a whole house fan. No clue on the noise difference. Your thoughts?

I'm looking into setting up a yearly maintenance contract for 6 ACs (4 central, 2 ductless) and 4 furnaces. This is for a house of prayer with an attached house. I got a quote for about $1,000 (drops to about $750 after 2nd year) from a company that has a good reputation, and that we've used for repairs in the past. My concern is that looking through repair bills I noticed a few replaced capacitors and I had to clean a flame sensor, yet I don't see those listed on the contract (posted below). Is it common for yearly maintenance agreements to include (1) measuring the uF on caps (2) measuring uA coming out of flame sensors. (3) some kind of check of the contactor Is there anything else you'd expect to be checked? I plan to discuss this with the company, but figured I'd get some advice here first. Outside Unit Not Kicking On

The compressor and fan on my central air unit will not kick in. When the unit comes on the fan does not, but I can hear a hum from the motor. If I start the fan moving it will continue to run. The compressor, however, also does not come on. I replaced the contactor and now it tries to kick on, but still will not. Any ideas?Read More
