Carrier Coil Replacement
Live in FL, and have a 12 year old Carrier Variable speed fan coil with Puron refrigerant - unit model # is FV4A. Just had yearly tune up and other than having to have the drain line blown out all was well -- but the tech said that the coil was in really bad shape and maybe had a year left (of course it could last 5 years also). Given that I had just (last year) replaced the fan for $1k, I was wondering if it would be worth it to replace the coil (new similar unit would run around $8k) and if so where I could find INFO on how to do it myself .... I am fairly handy but no A/C experience.
Thanks..
Thanks..

Unfortunately that is not a do-it-yourself job. The refrigerant needs to be pumped out of the system for the coil to be replaced. Then the system is checked for leaks, put under vacuum to remove moisture and then re-charged. An EPA certification, as well as some expensive equipment, is required to do the job as it involves refrigerant handling.

Thanks PJ.. thought it might be a bit of a stretch... Any idea (gross range of course) on what a coil replacement would run?

Sorry... can't help you with replacement cost.
Can you ask the tech that you had there previously ?

If you're not having any problems with your unit then I don't see why you need to change it at all. Many companies send out "salestechs" on "tuneups" who's main motivation is to sell, sell, sell
From what I've seen especially in Florida when the units get to be ten years old most companies smell blood and want to sell you a new unit whether you need it or not.
