AC only works when its hot outside!?!?!?

Ok so I have an older Rheem system on my house probably 10 years old, its a package unit on the roof. The problem is my ac doesn't work at night or early morning or if the outside temperature is cooler out (85-90), and it seems like everything is working properly cause when the thermostat hits temp. and tells the ac to kick on the only thing that happens is the air vents blow air just the compressor isn't turning on. I can manually turn it on by pressing the contact points but shuts off as soon as i release it. But if its 100+ out it works great all day!? I've changed the thermostat to rule that out.

Anyone got any idea?

Thanks in advance!

Lack of refrigerant.

The low pressure switch is tripping unless it is hot, which elevates pressures.

ok I will check the pressure later when i can get some gauges but one other thing is when we were entering summer so lets say 85-90 was a hot day and ac would work fine but when temperature dropped to about 80 it would do the same thing. Could that still be the same problem?
