Aircon Noise When Powered Off
Currently staying in Manila, Philippines.
I have a Carrier (brand) 5-in-1 filter wall mounted aircon in my 9th floor condo (see image below).
So just the vent, filter and controls are inside the room. The rest is mounted to outside wall in metal cage.
In the last few weeks there has been an ever increasing loud clicking noise coming from the vent.
I can hear it when the aircon is on but sounds loudest when the aircon is *off* (probably because the noise of the aircon itself is not masking the sound).
Drives me crazy at night and is tantamount to Chinese water torture.
The noise sounds as it could be metal expanding/contacting due to temperature variations or possible due to water drips on metal casing being amplified.
However the noise rarely stops even if the aircon and not been in use of for over 8 hours (the longest I can go in this heat without it) and I do not think either of these things are the cause (no water nearby, not rained for several days when noise has still been heard, the temperature is constant and has not always done this).
I am assuming even if I were to know the cause I could not attempt a repair myself due to the location of the unit?
So assuming I need to get someone in to service it is there anything that I could say to explain the problem and possible cause for them to check?
Many thanks.

Are you sure that it isn't the neighbors con air that you hear?
There are floors above so I guess could be theirs but not too sure of this. They would need to have their aircon on 24/7 for it to be so.
If I put my ear to the vent of mine the noise is very loud and makes me think it comes from mine but cannot be sure.
For certain the vent does seem to bring a lot of other external noises into my condo (but nowhere near as much as having the windows open).

I bet it's water from a unit above you dripping on your unit. Maybe somebody changed a unit which now drips? Can you see your unit clearly from outside? Maybe a pair of binoculars to really see if it's indeed water from a unit about you.

They have taken aircon unit away to service and clean. and put some matting on the cage/housing(?).
They also cut of a few inches from the end of the small hose on my unit as it had small split and was wet outside.
Looking down through cage it is entirely possible there has been water leaking from my unit (probably from the split hose) to the one below and this is cause of noise. There is no matting on the one below and it is soaking wet. I just sent a few drops down and the noise is very similar. Believe this condo has been empty the whole time I have been here (certainly is now) else they may have spotted problem before me (expect noise is much worse for them). Will update post tomorrow to advise of outcome.

Sorry for delay. All good now. No more water drips below so noise gone.
Well there some noise but nothing to disturb my sleep. Same sound but is further off so suspect a neighbor has similar problems.
Thanks for replies
