Replace Thermosat

It is a cool day, so we opened the winows and turned the thermostat up. After a few moments, however, the A/C continued to run. So I turned the unit of at the thermostat, but the A/C continued to run. I went into the attic and tured the unit off.

This may be a silly question, but can this be somehing other than a bad thermostat? I have a 10-11 year-old Honeywell programmable thermostat.

Welcome to the forums!! Are you saying that the condenser (outside unit) is not turning off or is it the inside unit where the blower is located?

Thanks for the welcome!

It is the inside unit that continues to run. If the thermostat does need to be replaced, what is a good, sub-$100 programmable product?

I suggest you turn off power to the inside unit and remove the wire from the G terminal at the thermostat. Restore power and see if the blower stops. If the blower does stop it points to the thermostat as the problem. If the blower does not stop then there is another issue that will have to be troubleshooted such as a stuck relay in the air handler.

As far as a thermostat, it would depend on what features you are looking for.

No, the G terminal is the where the wire connects that goes from the thermostat to the blower relay. What model thermostat do you have? if you have a standard type thermostat it should have terminals marked R, G, Y, W and etc.
