Where to put the air filter? (pictures included)

Where to put the air filter? (pictures included)

I just bought my first (old) house made in the early 70's. I'm replacing the A/C filter for the first time and it's placed way up there:

This is what it looks like when I open it up:

And way up in that opening is the filter itself:

My question: do I need to climb up and replace the filter that way, or can I just get a bigger filter and put it in like a normal filter would be placed, just underneath the grating (and so I wouldn't have to climb up)?

Looks like you have a duct coming in just prior to the filter so you're going to have to replace what's there.

Is there access in the attic to get to filter? Can you post a pic of the furnace?
