Rust on Trane evaporator coil
Trane 4TEC3F24B1000AA evap coil. In a "conditioned" attic (foam insulation under roof, sealed soffit), South Carolina summer temps under 100F in attic, very clean. Unit installed early 2009. Is this rust of any concern? Or is it more of a cosmetic thing. Second foto of inside coil.

The coils are copper but the frame and sheet metal holding it are steel and that's what you see rusting. Is it good, no. Is there much you can do about it, not really. HVAC components have a limited life and as yours is approaching 15 years old it's in the realm where parts of the system may need servicing or to be replaced.
I would keep an eye on the catch pan below. Make sure that it is clear of dust, dirt and rust which might clog the drain.

Actually, the unit is approaching its seventh year of service. I guess by the time it gets to be 15 years old the coils will be sitting on the pan

Oh, it's that darn math again. You are entirely correct.
Unfortunately I see the rust your experiencing quite a bit. The steel side plates stay wet from condensation for months on end. Down at the coast they can look really rough when you add in the salt air.
