AC Contact Problem

First off, thanks to the site monitors and members who make this possible.

My family member has an Amana Model no RCC48A2B MFG no P1218507C

If the contacts are manually pushed in the Compressor and Fan engage and cool air inside so PASS

I hear a click in the thermostat but contact will not engage so auto FAIL

The unit worked last year. Removing all power and opening the panel reveals 5 small lizard skeletons hunkered around the connections of the Capacitor Poly (diagram no 0091 at sears parts direct.com)
Capacitor, Contactor 30A, Relay Start are also listed

A meter was not available to check the control voltage at the contact (24V?).
Order Capacitor or look further?

Not a cap issue, you need to check for 24volts at the contactor when there's a call for cooling.

problem solved

tomf63 good call

just checked with the meter
24VAC at the thermostat so transformer voltage present
No control voltage present in the condenser
tracked wire back and found the 24VAC wires are chewed apart
splice wires and she started right up

Same problem with a twist

I am having a similar problem. Started with a dead thermostat. Replaced the thermostat and still nothing. Checked voltage...nothing. Replaced transformer...new thermostat came alive. Indoor fan comes on just fine. Compressor/outdoor unit...nothing. Checked voltage at contactor...have correct voltage. Outdoor unit will come on if I manually close (test) the contactor. Thoughts???

If you see 24V at the contactor, but the button is not pulled in, then the contactor is bad.

Did U use an ohm meter to check if the low voltage coil was open?
What was the voltage reading?
