Air condititoner fan

I tried to turn on the air conditioner today in a apartment that has not been used in several years. Needless to say it did not work. The fan would not spin; so that is where I am starting. Took unit apart and saw that the shaft that holds the fan blades was very corroded and did not spin at all. After beating on it with a hammer the shaft did free up but as you can guess the unit still does not work. Would it be a safe bet to say the motor needs to be replaced?

If the motor shaft wouldn't turn (and it wasn't connected via a belt to something else), it's a safe bet to say that the motor bearings have rusted, particularly if it hasn't been used in several years. Time for a new motor.

Are you the owner of the apartment? If not let the LD take care of it.
