Replaced thermostat, white wire wasn't connected. Why?

I was helping my uncle replace his thermostat (he's got two in the store, two ac units) and noticed the white wire on one wasn't connected. From some quick googling, apparently it has to do with the heat. Why wouldn't it be connected? I reconnected it because he wanted me to. Is that ok? Thanks a ton!

With white wire disconnected...no heat. Did you connect it to the W terminal?

Could be the other stat brings on both units in heat mode.
