Thermostat temp rises when AC is running

We moved into our house in May 2013. We had an old style rotary thermostat. I replaced it with a Honeywell digital thermostat. Everything worked fine for nearly 2 years. Then, this past April, once it began getting warm enough to start using the AC, I noticed that when the air comes on, the thermostat temp starts rising very slowly and it wont come down so the air will just run until I turn it off. The air works fine. Good cold air.

I replaced the batteries in the thermostat and checked the wire connections to make sure nothing was loose that might be causing heat to be generated. Finally, I replaced the thermostat with a new Honeywell. For the past 2 weeks, everything has been fine. Then a few days ago, it started doing the same thing again.

I've never had this type of problem with a AC system before. Hopefully someone else out there has and can give me some direction.

I would place a mercury thermometer next to the thermostat and compare the readings. If the mercury drops and the thermo rises, I would be on the phone to Honeywell.

Only tw things I can think of is either a bad stat of if it is close to the return and there is a hole behind it creating hot attic air to come down the wall and warming stay. I have seen lights too close also.
