Trane A/C Compressor Fan Stopped...Capacitor??

Found compressor running but fan not turning. Turned off at thermostat and let sit for maybe ten minutes. Turn it back on and the compressor and fan both start. Fan quits turning after about 5 to 10 minutes. Turn off at thermostat ... wash/rinse/repeat. you get the idea.Thermostat seems to keep resetting to 78 degrees after each instance. Is this a capacitor gone bad? Is it one of those dual voltage capacitors where one voltage starts the fan and the other keeps it running?

Sorry, no specific model yet. Too dark and not sure where to look in the dark.

Thanks,
Greg

The tag should be visible on the outside but may be hard to read. It could very well be a cap problem. You'd need to turn off power to the condensor, remove the access cover(s) near the wiring entrance area and visually inspect the cap(s).

Look for the terminal end to be bloated.

Look down the list of threads here...... half are for the same exact problem you're having. Many have pics of defective caps in them.
