50 microfarad vs. 35 mf

It's 94 degrees / temp index of 102. I'm hot, sweaty, and miserable, and it's Sunday (no stores open!), so I'll get right to the point.

Condensor calls for 370/50+5 capacitor...but all I have on hand is a 35+5.

I've had issues with capacitors before, so I know just enough to be dangerous. But I've also learned to STOP and ask before doing something really stupid. So...

How 'stupid' would it be to use the 35mf cap until I can get a 50mf cap tomorrow? Should I just sweat it out?

Thanx!! Wally

It's hard to say what will happen.
The 35m will not properly power the start winding of the compressor so I'd be leery of using it.

PJ, I know I'm stretching here, but if the 5 mf and 35 mf have the same voltage rating, could they be used in parallel to provide 40 mf and be within 20% of the desired 50 mf?

Ahh...interesting thought Bud. I guess my only concern would be (keeping in mind limited knowledge base)...isn't the mf 'tolerance' only +/- 6%?

But I do understand what you're saying. Hmmm......

But before anyone spends too much time on this...it's 7:30pm, and I'm sure I'll find a 50+5 somewhere tomorrow, so if the family can sweat through til I get home tomorrow evening, relief is in sight.

Thanx to all!

Last check here in Maine it was a comfortable 70 and going down to the low 60's tonight.
Get the fans out and stay cool.
Not sure on the cap tolerance, but the old ones I worked with, basic electrolytes were really poor, plus and minus 20% was a good one. I'm getting old

Best
Bud
