9 pm last night I noticed the AC wasnt working OMG wife is freaking out so I go out to see and notice the compressor will run but shuts down quick on OL... The cooling blower fan is not so I go get a stick and spin the fan and it runs cools the house down Yeaaaaa.
Problem is who is gonna stay out side all night with the stick so Im thinking if I can cool the compressor enough maybe it will run long enough to keep the house a little cool. So i went and got a old box fan set it on top of the compressor air blowing into the compressor and in a short time it cooled it off so I thought ok a temporary fix , I noticed the compressor fan was spinning slowly backwards. I went inside and turned the thermostat down just to see how long it would run with my temp fix... I went outside and the compressor was running and so was the compressor cooling fan, BUT it was just running in reverse . I decided that was ok at least till I could get a new Cap in the morning.
I woke up the house was nice and cool and the compressor was cycling just as normal.
I replaced the cap and now my AC is fine , so the question is....
Is it ok to run the fan motor in reverse for a long period of time ? How long ?

I doubt that you have done any damage to your motor but I have had to return on that type of service call and replace the motor within a couple of weeks after replacing the cap.
It may be an indication that you will be replacing the motor this summer.
I hope that you have better luck than I did.
