Central Air Duct Question

My air handler is in the attic with ceiling registers. My heating system is in the basement with registers near the floors. When using the air conditioning, is there any reason why I should shut the heating registers? I often wondered if cold air was wasted by being drawn onto the heating ducts. I also thought about the reverse when the heat is on.

Unless you have a significant amount of leakage in your ducts I see little to be gained by closing the registers on the system not being used. If you DO have leaking ducts then the leaks should be fixed.
