Red face How to remove blower wheel from Frigidaire window a/c?

Hello. I am in the middle of taking apart a very neglected Frigidaire window a/c unit. The styrofoam ducting is just caked with black mold. I am trying to remove it so i can clean all sides of the foam, but I cannot get the wheel off of the motor shaft to allow removal of the rear piece of styrofoam. I have removed the gray metal clamp, but the wheel just will not budge. Is there some special tool needed to effect removal, or is it supposed to just slide straight off? Thank you for reading.

The picture is good. Rust is the culprit. You need to spray the shaft with Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster. Allow it a good 1/2 hour to soak in. Even better if you can tip the A/C so that the liquid runs into the blower hub.

If you can't pull the wheel off directly after waiting..... take a socket or spacer just larger than the shaft and give the wheel a SLIGHT tap. That will help break the rust free too.

PJmax, I have sprayed copious amounts of Liquid Wrench on the area, and it didn't help. I let it sit overnight.

The plastic shaft fits snugly on the motor shaft.

What I have also done to break a wheel free is to put two shims behind the blower wheel. Sometimes wooden paint stirrers work good. Then tap on the motor shaft with a piece of wood and a hammer.

The idea is if the wheel is held out..... the motor shaft can push in slightly. Don't use a metal hammer directly on the shaft or you'll burr the end.

Well, I'm finding it very difficult to have any room to do this with the evaporator coil in the way.
