Central a/c unit takes in outdoor air?

Hi,

Moved in to a rental, and the outside air is often full of cigarette smoke from a chain smoking neighbor, which means as the weather gets warmer, I'll need to run the a/c a lot rather than open windows (despite living in temperate San Diego). However, the central a/c unit is located right on the front patio with the bad air.

How can I tell whether the unit will take in any outdoor air? My understanding is that it varies by unit and installation.

I can send photos as needed. The unit is only 1 year old, Armstrong Air, model #13ACD-030-230-15. Again, it's central a/c, not window unit. The air intake vent is indoors at the top of my stairs.

Thank you!
Tyler

Most systems don't take in outside air. The condensing unit only blows air over the coil.

Welcome to the forums.

You can breath easily.
As skaggsje mentioned..... split A/C units don't bring in any outside air.

Yes.... you have a typical split unit. Condenser outside and air handler inside.
No outside air is exchanged.
