It is dead.

Your last hope would have been a melted plug shorting against the compressor body.

How much should I expect to pay for a new 3.5 ton 410a system installed (furnace in the attic standing up)? How much would labor only be to install compressor in current system? Also what's the going rate for R22 freon per pound? I'm in Atlanta if that matters. I'm going to be selling this place soon so I'd shoot for builder grade system if I put new system.

Pricing in TX is very likely different then in GA. Your best bet is to check your local area for pricing of a 14 SEER R410 condenser and evaporator coil.

If I change to r410a can I use my existing coil and just have piston replaced?

I've received mixed answers from different hvac techs.
