Condenser fan not working

I just purchased this home and the ac fan will not come on. The compressor comes on but the fan will not. I've replaced the capacitor which is a 3 lead dual capacitor. I checked the wiring diagram to make sure wires were connected correctly. The fan fired up initially but seemed to be slow and rotating backwards. It ran for about 5-10 minutes then cut off. After letting it rest for a while it will only start up with a push start backwards. It spins freely forward but will not run forward.

I can't say for sure, but I would guess that you don't have it wired correctly. Is there a wiring diagram on the inside of the outside unit cover? Or, did you take a picture or sketch a diagram of where the wires went before you took them off?

There is a diagram on the panel. I also took the wires off and connected them one at a time to ensure I was doing it correctly. Idk if the previous owner did it wrong but I checked the diagram and it seems to be wired correctly.

It sounds like you need to replace the motor.
The new motor may require a different capacitor.

Thanks. I'll try that. Was hoping that wasn't the problem though.

Have you verified the wires to be in good shape & the cap you are using is correct. Just because it's new & the same as you took out, means neither that it's good or the correct one.

I am using a 35/5UF 440 VAC. Would I need to check the panel or the motor to find out if it's correct?

I just checked the motor and it says 5.0MFD 370 v cap. So I'm assuming I have the wrong one. Right?

Usually the motor states what value capacitor it requires. As long as the voltage rating on the capacitor is equal or higher than the original, it's fine to use. The important thing is that the capacitance value (5mfd in your case) is correct. It appears that the new capacitor you're using is correct (assuming you're using the 5mfd side (the "F" terminal on the capacitor).
