Central A/C motor not turning

Central A/C motor not turning
Our central AC motor is not turning when the thermostat is on and the fan is running. I went outside and checked. The fan blades turn but the motor does not run. I don't know about the compressor. I'm fairly handy but ignorant in this area. Is this something I can/should replace myself, if so are there pointers, or should I have a "professional' do it?
There were no other problems, the AC was cold yesterday thru most of the day.
Thanks for the tips.

Outside you have a condensor that contains a compressor and a fan.
Inside you have a furnace or air handler that contains the blower.
You're saying the condensor fan spins (by hand) but won't run.... is that correct ?
Try setting the system to cool and carefully pushing the fan blades with a stick. Does it turn or start to turn now ?
If yes... you may need a new fan motor capacitor.
You can check for compressor operation by feeling the larger copper line where it exits the condensor. It should be cold.
If the system was left in the cool mode and the fan wasn't running correctly..... the compressor could be shut down on thermal overload from overheating. Allow it to cool.
