Should I clean this AC fan myself?

Suddenly I saw a bunch of dirt on the AV vents and beyond (a through-the-wall unit). I'm not sure how long it's been like that. Luckily the vents snap on and off in one piece so I removed it and cleaned what I could, but the fan blades are just as dirty. Is there any risk of electric shock or breaking something expensive if I try to take things apart to access the fan to clean it myself?

Just pull the plug out before vacuuming.

If your fan is that dirty... what does the front of the coil look like ?
Are you running that unit without a filter ?

The coil is dirty but not horrible. I may have vacuumed it when I cleaned the filter. I'll vacuum it again. It has one of those permanent mesh filters, not foam. I only clean it once a year but it doesn't seem to get horribly dirty.

So, I guess during the day I'll unplug it and see what I can remove to get better access to the fan. I took that photo through the 2-1/2" high vent opening.

I think the vibration from the last few weeks disturbed the nice even coat of dirt and turned it into dust bunnies and some were released from the blade and coated the vent. I may need new hard foam under the AC to stop the vibration. It's not vibrating right now though.
