Did my air conditioner do this?

Hi,

This past summer I bought a new air conditoner. An old one was in the same post but it was much smaller (a Carrier LCA061). I have noticed a crack at the bottom of the center column between the two windows now and wonder if it has been caused by the new air conditioner.

What do you think?

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,

John

If that apron was not firmly attached to the studs behind it the stool will sag and cause a crack like that.

You could have had water (condensate) from the old A/C entering the wall and causing it to rot. You are going to need to open the wall and check. I pretty much had to rip out a whole section of wall including the studs and rim beam because of that.

Thanks all. How bad do you think it will get. I don't think I can have it ripped out and replaced. If I take the a/c out and put it in next summer would that worsen the problem? I think it is resting on the storm window frame and I know it is also resting on a block inbetween that and the inside as well.

Taking the A/C out won't worsen the problem. It's felt that the problem is caused by the weight of the A/C on the window sill. Doing nothing will not improve the problem.

So, would it be a good idea to bang some nails in below the top of the apron to try to firm up the support? Do I need to do it just where the crack is or all along? Thanks.
