Where to buy minisplit units online ?
Where is a good and reputable place to buy mini split system online ? and how are the prices online vs instore ? I have a friend's friend who is a license HVAC technician who can do the installation. He offered to sell me what he has instock (limited selections) or I can buy my own and he will just charge me installation.

I'd focus on name brands like Mitsubishi, Samsung, Fujitsu, and Daikin. Had some bad experiences with those other off brand units from the internet.
Something I'd suggest is to either pay a contractor to supply and install the unit or do it yourself. If you pay someone to do it, you'll be responsible for warranty labor costs or paying for repairs or additional work needed which can wipe out any money saved by buying it yourself.

I'm definitely going to hire someone to do the installation. The guy who is doing the installation said he has a few unit in stocks that he can sell to me, but it is not the brand that I want. I'm also looking into one of those japanese brands (Mitsubishi, fujistu, daikin, etc). I just don't know where is a reputable website to buy it from. Or the difference between buying online vs store is minimum ? Such that I should just check out my local HVAC stores.

Those local stores will likely not sell to you.
Also, the main reason I suggested doing it yourself, is the name brands will likely not come with a warranty. So you'll be responsible if something goes wrong or the unit doesn't work. Mitsubishi is especially strict about this.

another question, is it worth getting a higher seer rating unit ? I found a 18k btu daikin system with 15 Seer for about $1100, the same Btu system with 20 Seer is significantly higher at $1900. I live in NYC with a high electricity rate...

The ROI probably wouldn't be there.
How are you sizing this unit? Do you have 15k BTU of heat gain?

Amazon has some units as well as other various sites(just google )
Mr.cool offers a DIY unit, precharged and all,35k btu for about 2300 bucks. It is on Home Depot as well as Amazon.Has good w. Only problem is that is just one head unit, not a multizone.
Mr.cool rep on Amazon stated they will be coming out with DIY multizone unit soon. That comment was in August of 2016 on Amazon.
I am about to jump the gun on an unit, just havnt decided yet.
