Just a simple quality control question on my brand new HVAC system

I have another question on the the new central split unit heating A/C system installed in my house last week. They included a new ceiling grill where the 20X25X1 air filter is inserted. The old grill held in the air filter snugly. This new one has about 1/8 inch of play on either side so the filter is loose and will fall out when I open the grill. Is this ok? Just doing a little more quality control.

The movement shouldn't cause an issue. You could put some self stick foam on the grill to hold the filter tighter.

The self stick foam comes on a roll and is used for around doors and windows.
Comes in handy for many around the home projects.

Check to make sure their aren't small tabs that can be bent in to hold it tighter. The last three places I've lived, the tabs were there. Look sort of like a knockout on a metal junction box.

I have some leftover self stick adhesive

Are these the tabs you're referring to?

Typically from what I've observed, when the HVAC comes on, the suction pulls the filter tight into the recess if there is any slack. You just have to make sure the filter can fit flush up into the recess (no protruding screws). That's why the some light filters can make a *Whack* sound when the HVAC activates.

Any gaps on the sides are inconsequential relative to the gaps at the mating surface. You wouldn't want to put anything between the filter and the facing flange of the grill that would provide a gap that allowed air to bypass the filter.

That's the tabs I meant! You just bend both sides out enough to keep the filter in place while you are changing it. As stated, not too tight, but the HVAC kicking on normally sucks it right up to the duct.

The installer should have done it before he left.

I wouldn't use any foam or adhesive. That's the last thing you would want to get sucked in to the system.

Ok. Thanks. Done.

The filter does get sucked up into the recess when A/C kicks on. And I notice it will also suck a sheet of paper tight against the grill too.
