Compressor fan spins backward until compressor turns on

Hi, My A.C. was working fine but all of a sudden I have these symptoms... When the compressor is NOT on, the compressor fan spins slowly backwards. When the compressor kicks on the compressor fan reverses direction and spins about half speed in the proper direction. I have a dual capacitor that's about 1 year old and a quick start unit which is also about 1 year old. Any ideas what would cause this to start happening?

Are you sure it isn't just the wind blowing the fan when the unit is off?

Yes I'm sure it's not the wind. I actually found a youtube video explaining the exact things I'm seeing... https://youtu.be/jt3EDoipP4g Sounds like the compressor fan is internally grounded. Time for a new fan I guess.

You need to disconnect the fan motor wiring and check it with an ohmmeter to check for a shorted winding to ground.

Easy job if you have a meter. Eliminates the guessing,

Yup the resistance was way off on the bad motor. I Just finished putting in a new motor and all is well. Interesting side note... when I started it up with the new motor the hard start capacitor blew (scared the crap out of me of course). Is there a start up routine that I should have followed or was this just coincidence? I just disconnected it for now and everything is working.
