Return Air Filters in 1990 Trane XL downflow furnace
We purchased our home with a 1990 Trane XL downflow furnace. The two filters are supposed to sit in a "V" position above the system. The problem is the flimsy metal bar that I think is supposed to be a "bracket" was never attached. It is just loose up in there, making it more than frustrating and extremely time consuming to get both filters and the loose bar in there "just right" (using one hand) so they will stay.
Any ideas of how to retro-fit that bracket permanently? My husband want to call a HVAC man and have him take half the system out just to get back in there and attach the flimsy metal piece.
The return air vents are small 12 x 12 vents in each of the four bedrooms the system feeds so it does not seem effective to place filters in those.
Another problem he has is the 14 x 20 metal electrostatic permanent filters seem to fit fine....once he gets them in. However, while he is cleaning them and letting them dry for a day, he puts the same size cardboard filters up in furnace and they have to bend in the middle to fit, making it even more difficult to get them to stay. Why is this? Why aren't they the same fit as the metal filters?
Any other brainstorming ideas of how to make the filter change less stressful for my husband.....It really gets under his skin.
