Ductboard in supply plenum
My home's A/C coil recently froze over (fixed now) and a fair amount of water dripped down into my supply plenum and made a big sloppy mess. Started doing cleanup, and I noticed someone had laid loose pieces of ductboard along the bottom of the plenum. I pulled the wet, ruined ductboard -- which wasn't taped or glued down -- out of the plenum, and now all there is exposed wood inside the plenum. My question: Is there any point in replacing that ductboard on the bottom of the plenum? I assume it was there for insulation or sound reduction or whatnot, but the plenum seems fine without it.

Welcome to the forums.
I'd say if it's in the return plenum it's not necessary.
if it's in the supply plenum, where it's cold, it may be needed to keep the wood from sweating and molding.

You'll have to forgive me, but I'm not sure what the difference is. The ductboard I mentioned was in the enclosure underneath the blower where the air is sucked in. In other words, it's the plenum where the air is sucked in up through he filter and into the blower. Thanks for your feedback!

The return plenum supplies return air to the blower. The supply plenum supplies the conditioned air (heated or cooled) to the rooms. From your description, you're referring to the supply plenum.

Looks like you are in Texas, most of the air handlers are in the attic in Texas where the temperature can reach 125 degree in Summer. I suggest you put the board back for insulation purpose if your air handler is in the attic.

Nope, my air handler is in an upstairs hallway A/C closet. The supply plenum is in a spot underneath it, kinda in between the first and second levels of the house. I'm leaning against replacing the ductboard in there. Been checking, and there doesn't seem to be any moisture or dampness on the wood without it. Also, the duct board that was there before was kinda thrown in half-ass. Someone just cut up a few pieces and laid them on the wood. There was still exposed wood along the walls of the plenum and in between the cracks where the ductboard was laid before the leak occured. Still, if someone can convince me it needs to be there, I'll swing by home depot, pick some up, and lay it down.
