Question Relocating A/C unit

When installing an A/C unit, what is the recommended distance from the building/house? The A/C unit on my daughter's town home (she's has an end unit) needs to be moved, and I would like to see it at least a foot or so clear of the house/privacy fence. However it would need to come out about 4 feet into the yard. Does an A/C unit loose efficiency if it is located that far from the house?

Moving the unit further from the house will not affect efficiency. It may improve slightly if the air doesn't hit anything in the back of the unit. One thing to remember... the more the condensor is out of the sun.... the better.

Moving it further does have its disadvantages. The refrigerant line set is more exposed to damage. There will be some cost involved with the move too. The refrigerant will need to be removed, the lines cut and extended, system evacuated and then recharged. Extend the electric also.
