A/C unit won't start up until reset every time
Hello, I have a Bryant all in one outside unit. A couple days ago an issue started I can't pinpoint the cause of. The unit functions normally when running, however, when it reaches desired temperature and kicks off, it will not start back up until I reset the breaker, turn the thermostat to the off position and wait a few minutes and then flip back to cool. Sometimes it only takes this process to be done once and someone I have to perform this process repeatedly to get the unit to start back up. I am an automotive technician and I am not very familiar with home HVAC. I understand the basics but am not very familiar with home thermostats and the electrical and safety switch portions of home HVAC. Any help would be highly appreciated as my wallet is a little light at the moment. Thank you

No, the breaker is not tripping, it is not even getting warm. The only way the unit will restart is if I turn the breaker off and back on and then go inside and turn the thermostat to off, wait a few minutes and then turn it back to the cool position. Sometimes I will have to repeat this process several times to get the unit to turn on

If your compressor/condenser (outside unit) has a Time Delay Relay (TDR), it could be your problem. It's purpose is to prevent the compressor from turning on too soon after it turned off, however if you have a digital thermostat, there is a 5 minute delay built into the thermostat (thermostat won't call for cooling until at least 5 minutes after it last called for cooling). You probably have circuit diagram inside the cover of the outside unit. If your unit has a TDR (not all units do), you can either check with a voltmeter the next time the A/C doesn't come on, or just try jumpering around it. FWIW, I had this problem with my 5 year old Bryant system. It's now ~25 years old and still running fine with the TDR jumpered out.

Thank you. I took the thermostat of the wall and hooked the red, green and yellow wired together and it started fine every time I tried all the wires. This told me it was the thermostat that was the problem (I beleive). Put a cheap thermostat in and out send to be staying every time now. Thank you for your replies an info on the TDR as it may save me in the future.
