Forced air heat system question

I have a 2 story home with forced heat and a/c ductwork throughout. We had the system installed while adding on to the house about 10 years ago. I remodeled part of the house last year. While doing that I covered an intake grate.
What does that do? Is there much of an imbalance in the system now ? Does it shorten the life of the system at all?

It doesn't shorten the life of the system but it's important to bring the unconditioned air back to the furnace. The system of supply registers and returns keeps the air flowing for maximum efficiency and balanced heating/cooling.
