AC coil leak

If the leak is on indoor evaporator coil or outdoor condensor coil, can the coil be fixed? One contractor says the leak can be found fixed and AC refilled for under $1,500. Does that sound reasonable? The ac unit is about 14 years old, so it is old enough, but my friend had ac unit lasting 24 years.

That's a judgement call. You need to ask your contractor what kind of guarantee he'll give you on his repair. It also depends on the general condition of the coil. If it's highly corroded.... a repair would not be recommended.

IMHO I would not fix a coil on a 14 year old unit. These coils are made of paper thin materials if it has pinholes it will continue to deteriorate and leak in other spots. Invest your funds into a new system.

Ant Nest AC Coil Corrosion

Recently saw leak spot on my 50 year old GE 3 ton air handler coil. Had replaced outside unit in 1994 with more efficient one.

Did a web search and found "ant nest" is name for a type of corrosion on AC's. Articles say is common to all brands of AC's.
