During a complete remodel of our home, we hired a company to relocate our air handler in our pier and beam home. It's a 5-ton unit and in its new location currently only has one 24x24 air return. This single return is not sufficient for the unit and this has resulted in excess condensation within the unit that is now causing water damage to the floor. We contacted the guys who moved the air handler and are responsible for the undersized air return and they have proposed to do something like the attached picture, installing a second return in the hallway.... Unfortunately, these guys don't seem to be very good at math and we don't trust them to size things right.
Their proposal is to install a second return (14x30) connected via 16" flexiduct to the blower.
What do you think of this plan? Will the combined air flow be sufficient for a 5-ton blower? Is there a better solution?
