Intermitent A/C condenser problem

Twice in the past week I have come home to a hot house. Inside unit running outside unit not running. Turned thermostat off and gathered tools to go check outside unit and turned thermostat back on. Get outside and before I can start removing cover the unit starts up and begins working. Any ideas what I need to check?

May be a trouble code stored in the outdoor unit. Cycling the thermostat resets said code.
What brand of unit, and what’s the model number?

Sorry, been out of town for a few days. It is a Carrier Model 38YEO48310. My wife says it has done it twice more in the passed week. Today it tripped the breaker that runs the fan and compressor. The thing is 25 years old. Probably need to replace it.

Check for shorts, or a faulty capacitor.

Just put new capacitor on fan and compressor about a month ago. Neither runs until reset thermostat. Checked all wiring and can not find any shorts.

Come to think of it all this started after I replaced the capacitor. I may try to locate another cap tomorrow and change it out and see what happens.

Thanks for your help roughneck77

You can test the capacitor with a meter easily. Without buying unnecessary parts.
A blowing breaker and resetting the thermostat are two different problems.
