fan starting and stopping

I have a heat pump about 25 years old. Lately the air conditioning is acting strange. The fan in the house comes on and after a second or so sounds like it is cutting off. It doesn't cut off completely just kind of dies down and then comes back on. It may do this several times but then begins running fine. Can you experts tell me what is causing this or what to look at? It is a trane XL1200 and has been a great unit. Thanks for any input.

Welcome to the forums.

On a 25 year old air handler..... you could have a defective run capacitor or just a failing motor.
Check and see if the motor spins freely when off.
After the motor heats up and slows down.... turn the system off and feel the motor.... is it hot ?
