HVAC maintenance
A casual acquaintance said HVAC systems don't need yearly maintenance, which I would hire a pro to do. Is he correct?

Your friend is incorrect. There are several things that need periodic maintenance, like replacing filters, cleaning dust from internal parts, checking combustion, checking safeties for proper operation, etc....

What maintenance required is based on what type of system you have. Gas furnaces should be checked every year. I recommend having them professionally serviced at least every two years.
All system have filters that need to be replaced on a schedule.
Split A/C systems have an outside condenser that needs to be kept clean.
The condensate drain needs to be cleaned
There isn't much required maintenance with just an A/C system.
