Do I need a new AC unit
My thermostat battery was dead and the outside unit was ice all over it.I turned off for 2 hrs and back on after ice was melted. After 3 hrs it went from 82 to 78 and started icing up again,I just turned it off.It is 22years old 1.5(I think) ton carrier

Is the blower motor running?
Is the evaporator coil clean?
Is the air filter clean?
Is the air filter a high MERV restrictive type?
Are the supply air vents obstructed or closed?

Shouldn’t run the unit in an extremely dusty environment. If the filter was very dirty the coil may be clogged as well.
