AC stopped working. No air flow sound inside. I turned AC off at the wall thermostat, waited 10 minutes, turned AC on. I heard outdoor fan spinning. I went up to the attic and had a helper turn fan to ON. I hear a faint clicking sound but fan doesn't spin.
Question 1: I would like to replace the capacitor first, but where is it? Unit is Carrier 58CVA/CVX (with 5 ton outdoor unit). The circuit board has a constant yellow light on. When the fuse blew years back, the yellow light blinked a code (if I remember correctly).
Question 2: If the variable motor is bad, can I replace it with a single speed motor in principle? Thank you.
I had a very hot afternoon/evening yesterday, thinking my A/C unit had died . I then discovered that the GFCI outlet next to the bathroom sink had popped, but none of the electric panel breakers did. When I reset the outlet, power returned to the A/C unit and the house cooled down.
My furnace/AC and hot water heater are in a closet in the downstairs bathroom, and it never occurred to me that the sink outlet controlled power to the AC. It looks like it really only powers a pump, which I'm guessing is to handle drip pan overflow, but the pan was completely dry. There is a night light plugged into the socket, but it worked fine before the issue and worked fine last night.
Can anyone explain to me whether this wiring setup is appropriate or if the pump electric should come from a dedicated line? Any guesses as to why the outlet tripped when the pan was dry and the bathroom not being used? Thanks!
P.S. The blue& yellow arrows label is missing below; that is two 60w breakers

morning all, i just had a new furnace a/c installed and unfortunately went with a friend of the wifes family and i think i know as much as he does.. was a cluster since the beginning.it seems the system is cooling but i think its not getting rid of the humidity.. i had another guy come out and he said the system was overcharged.. it also had high head pressure. so he removed some refrigerant .. i also noticed the liquid line has never even felt warm to me. he said the line dryer could be clogged, but he doubted that, he recommended going to a 2.5 ton A coil which is a half ton larger than the system.. i feel like this new system should be sufficient for my small 1000 sq ft home, and dont want to buy anything else since the system is new.. the fan speed is on hi, and i was wondering if i could lower that to see if that helped with the cooling/dehumidifying? its such a mess, my old unit worked, but i figured it was 25 years old, so should upgrade. really regretting it so far! thanksRead More
