AC Unit not cooling

I moved into a new house a few months ago and one of my Units stopped cooling yesterday; of course on a Sat night before a holiday monday! I smelled something in the kitchen under where the unit is located; didn't know what it was, but now I suspect it was something in the AC. The fan blows but the compressor doesnt turn on (it was pretty loud); its an APG16M. What are the chances it's just the run capacitor? I replaced caps in my previous home; of curse this unit is on the roof so it's a bit more challenging.

I have a home warranty so I can get it fixed for $75, but might have to wait a week. It's 105 every day so I'd rather not wait.

The unit is only 1 year old; what are the chances it's just the cap?

Welcome to the forums.

Amana APG16M gas pack unit.

Extremely doubtful it's a bad capacitor on a one year old unit.
Could have been damaged when shipped/installion. Refrigerant leaked out.
It would be very hard to guess at a problem.

I did smell something; refrigerant leaking out would cause the compressor to not kick in? Wouldnt cooling have degraded? I had a leak in my fridge and it didn't stop cooling; it just didn't cool enough

I just realized that I just installed a new Nest thermostat; the one that came with the house had broken wifi. They're a little flakey when they're first installed.

You wouldn't smell the refrigerant. It just evaporates in the air.
There are pressure monitor switches that will shut the compressor down if the pressure is low from loss of refrigerant. There may be a re-settable high pressure switch that would shut the compressor down if the system pressure got excessive.

You need to determine if the condenser fan is running.
If it's running... the compressor should be running.

There are two fans..... one moves air into the house and the other is for cooling the condenser and the compressor. So you are saying you had airflow into the house but the condenser fan wasn't spinning.... is that correct ?

Home Warranty came through; service guy came this morning and replaced a bad contact. Cost me $75 so probably didn't save me too much. But I have AC
