AC Compressor Start Noise

The AC compressor outside seems to start with a hesitant groan before the fan gets to speed. (I wanted to attach a video recording but not seeing the go advanced prompt)

I'm guessing it's roughly 40 years old. Do I need to replace the motor?

It could be the compressor that's groaning.
You'd need to post the video at a host like you tube and post the address here.

The board is experiencing some problems right now.

The groan only seems to last only a second or two if that lends any clue?

No clue. Typically the compressor is much louder than the fan when starting.
If you can't tell for sure you may need to disconnect the fan for testing.

1988 Bryant AC Unit won't turn on or come back on

1988 Bryant AC Unit has been working consistently for over 12 years. We had an electrical surge and it wouldn't start back up. Fuses checked - fine Contactor - replaced Run capacitor appears fine and reads the appropriate MFDs. Run Capacitor appeared fine, but the MFDs weren't there. Replaced. Relay switch appears fine. Not sure how to test. Board appears fine. Not sure how to test. I'm getting 240V in, getting 24V from the thermostat, but it won't kick on. I depress the contactor plunger and it starts up. I hold for 30 seconds and it continues to run. Then it shuts off once temp is obtained and won't start up. Any ideas? historic home needs better AC return air venting

I have a historic home I have an accommodations business in. This means many of the rooms are closed most of the time, but the 3 up front have transom windows which are left slightly ajar. The back ones are the issue. There are 2 different joist levels between the 2 main rooms, and angled roofs above the side rooms. (Envision a simple farm house with gabled ends, although joists heights are not the same) The original 5 ton central unit is up front tucked under the closest roof line to the rear of the house. It was the only place to have a central air return which is what was normal when this was added in '99. There have always been issues with some rooms not being cold or too cold. Many discussions have been made with contractors but none really seem to have a solution. All are very reluctant to do anything. There is one large ductboard air duct coming from the front to the rear which the rear ducts come off of on the S. side of the house handing where a finished room was in the 1850's. This is also the part of the house with the lowest ceiling Downstairs (Fachwerk is 9', kitchen behind this is 10', Victorian Eastlake up front is 12'). I can bring a small 4-5" duct from the side room to this area through the brick wall supporting the rafters, as well as one from the next room and this room, to join a larger duct, but there is a limited access to the main air return on the other side of this roof line, due to the valley above the air return/furnace. Can someone suggest a type of filter for these? Would a box built to accept the smaller return ducts in the reverse of the air handler up front be suitable for some type of filter? I think I can collect these ducts in front of a larger box to hold the filter (which would have to be a long use filter needing changing only every 6 months), then have a specially made flat duct to go under the roof valley to the air return a foot or so away . My thinking is that any type of return air for these rooms will be helpful. Then the question would be where would I find small round ducts and covers? Preferably wood, because all my ceilings are painted 1 x 6 T&G. Any other suggestions would be appreciated barring some massive huge ducts that make the room all about the ventilation instead of the history. P.S. I just had the attic and floor joists foamed with closed cell insulation. I am hoping the huge utility bills will come down at this point. Read More
