Window A/C install: not sure how to deal with these windows

(If this is the wrong place for this, please let me know)

We bought this apartment last year and it's our first summer here. I was wondering if we could get some help on whether we're going to need something special to install our window unit on these windows. I've done my best to show side images of the window so you can see the white metal strip that sort of stands out in the center. My fear is that with that metal strip there the weight of the AC could damage it.

Anyone have any ideas what to do in this case?

With most double hung windows it's a good idea to cut a board down to size to lay in the window sill. The board should be the correct height, length and width to raise the air conditioner box up over the frame so that it does not scratch or damage it in any way. The board also help distribute the weight evenly.

And then it's usually advisable to use window air conditioner support brackets underneath the unit, that rest on the siding and allow you to adjust the angle of the air conditioner (it needs to tip to the outside slightly in order to drain) and they also take some of the pressure off the double hung window sash so that it does not warp or distort the sash.

Ok, so you're saying I'd literally build some board that would sit over the frame like a table protecting the sill?

No, I'm saying it would sit IN the sill.

Ohhh... so pieces of wood cut to sit in the sill to be at the same height or even a few mm higher so that white strip is not carrying any load and protected. Is that it?
And then once the AC is on that wood... what's going underneath the AC and the side panel mechanism which are now more elevated?

Yep. Google air conditioner support brackets if you don't know what they are.

The AC support bracket is going to hold the weight outside the building though. I don't get how that's also going to give me a level area - as it were - over the metal strip...

window air conditioner support brackets underneath the unit rest on the siding and allow you to adjust the angle of the air conditioner

Ok, gotcha, I just don't know that the support will reach the building siding. It's really far down and the sill is quite thick, and understanding how they work, I'll be surprised if a support can be placed in a way that will lean into the building without having to go out like 4 ft.

If you have a large masonry sill and the typical support brackets that rest on the siding won't work you might be able to use a couple adjustable legs on the brackets that will sit on the sill instead.

Example

The first full window you see from the left is the exact window the ACs will be on.

Can you post a picture from the inside looking at the window and frame ?

There are supports/frames that may work there.
Check out this system and watch the supplied videos ..... Top Shelf TSB-2438
