Window A/C install: not sure how to deal with these windows
(If this is the wrong place for this, please let me know)
We bought this apartment last year and it's our first summer here. I was wondering if we could get some help on whether we're going to need something special to install our window unit on these windows. I've done my best to show side images of the window so you can see the white metal strip that sort of stands out in the center. My fear is that with that metal strip there the weight of the AC could damage it.
With most double hung windows it's a good idea to cut a board down to size to lay in the window sill. The board should be the correct height, length and width to raise the air conditioner box up over the frame so that it does not scratch or damage it in any way. The board also help distribute the weight evenly.
And then it's usually advisable to use window air conditioner support brackets underneath the unit, that rest on the siding and allow you to adjust the angle of the air conditioner (it needs to tip to the outside slightly in order to drain) and they also take some of the pressure off the double hung window sash so that it does not warp or distort the sash.
Ohhh... so pieces of wood cut to sit in the sill to be at the same height or even a few mm higher so that white strip is not carrying any load and protected. Is that it?
And then once the AC is on that wood... what's going underneath the AC and the side panel mechanism which are now more elevated?
The AC support bracket is going to hold the weight outside the building though. I don't get how that's also going to give me a level area - as it were - over the metal strip...
Ok, gotcha, I just don't know that the support will reach the building siding. It's really far down and the sill is quite thick, and understanding how they work, I'll be surprised if a support can be placed in a way that will lean into the building without having to go out like 4 ft.
If you have a large masonry sill and the typical support brackets that rest on the siding won't work you might be able to use a couple adjustable legs on the brackets that will sit on the sill instead.
Carrier AC unit, less than 3 yrs old. Central forced air system, gas furnace inside with AC coils or condenser on top (not exactly sure on terminology).
AC worked great until it didn't. Fan on the outside ac unit will start but it doesn't sound like the compressor is starting. There is also zero air flow inside from the vents, even if I turn the fan "on", it's normally set to auto. So no fan from the inside.
Any ideas on such a new unit? My wife and I actually commented yesterday that the house felt cold, like the ac was working hard, but I didn't think 74 was a temp that would cause undue stress on the unit. I actually bumped up all the zones to 75 yesterday. Left for a meeting and the wife started texting saying how hot the house was getting. We're in Michigan and of course it's going to be 90 the next few days. I called the company that we bought from and they can't get anyone out here for another 5 days....Read More
I own a 2.5 Ton 16 SEER Multi Speed MrCool Signature Central Air Conditioner Split System. It was installed in 2021 and worked fine until this Spring when I started using the outside condenser. Since the beginning of April, I've blown (3) 24v transformers in the air handler. They all last about 2-3 weeks and then, poof. The last one blew today. I replaced the contactor in the condenser thinking that may be part of the problem. Nope. I've got no clue what to try next. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
