Question Help in designing 16'X60' mezzine

I am in process in building a mezzine in my loft. I only have 15'9" ceiling clearnace. I would like some input on what is the best material to use to span the 16' space without losing more clearance than I have to.

many thanks

hmmmmm....

are you thinking of creating 2 floors in there? both would be less than 8' ceiling clearance. I'm sure you know that! Code requires a minimum 7' ceiling height (I think, don't have the code book right in front of me & I also don't know where you live!) generally, so then you've got something like 1'-9" to get in your floor structure. That should be enough to use either dimensional lumber (probably end up with 2x12's at 12" o.c. - probably someone else can quote a span table) or trusses.

Of course, a mezzanine implies that only part of the space is 2 story. What you're not telling us is how large your space is in BOTH directions. Perhaps you want to use a larger beam to span the long way, and use smaller joists to span the short way.

Give us a little more info - perhaps we can get you an answer.
