code on studs and wires

Okay, other thread is closed. Still not sure what I am going to do but just wanted advice on running new outlets and what the normal codes permit. This might be better in electric forum and if it is, can a moderator move it?

Ceiling joists are 2x6 in the garage, studs normal 2x4. I will need to drill threw the 2x6s and one or two 2x4 top plates to run the wires.

How big of a hole can I drill (I have a long 3/8" spade bit-for when I ran RG6 cable). Would that work? How far from the edge of the joists or studs?

Thanks,
Pete

PS 2x4 on ceiling and hanging tarp still an option...LOL

Thanks. I planned on running 12-3 cable and just wanted to make sure that the holes would be big enough and didn't want to take away from the support strengths of the studs.

Your local building department will have a "boring" schedule.
Generaly for CJ and RR you bore in the middle 1/3 and 18" from the ends. For studs and plate, in the middle, and use "DOTTIE" or nail plates.

A 3/8" or 1/2" hole isn't large enough to get 12/3 through. You'll need a minimum 5/8", and 3/4" is what is commonly used. Drill through the center 1/3 of the tud or joist. If the edge of the hole is 1-1/4" or less from the edge of the framing member, install a nail plate (Simpson NS1 or NSP1, or similar) to protect the wire.

Thanks for the advise. At the time, I have opted to hang a tarp. The other project was starting to mushroom (with all the permits) and the object was to keep the sawdust out of the laundry area.

Hung a 8'6" x 12' tarp from a 2x4 from the ceiling. Built an outside frame to staple the tarp. Cut a overlapped slit in the tarp (this is my wifes idea for the door) and no dust.

I might go with the wall at a later date but not now.

Thanks,
Pete
