Replace ceiling joists?

Replace ceiling joists?
I am renovating an old attached workshop at my house and converting it for use as a music room. I have removed the walls & ceiling (1/4" plywood) and am ready to proceed (almost) with resilient channel and drywall.
I wanted to double-check on my ceiling joists before and see if they need replacement. They are currently 24" oc 2x4's, with an unsupported span of about 7'. I'll be using 1/2" drywall installed on RC across the joists.
Thanks!

darinstarr,
2x4's at 24" o.c. will span 8'-6" no issue. so you are in good shape. With 1/2" rock you will need the rc at 16" o.c. otherwise you need to go to 5/8" rock.
good luck.

Thanks Brian,
If I went without RC, would I need 5/8" rock with the joists at 24" oc? If I opted to apply 2 layers of sheetrock, would the 2x4's still be sufficient?
This room is oddly sized (13x13x9) which is making it difficult to work up a bill of materials without a lot of material wasted.

darinstarr,
Yep one layer 5/8" at 24" o.c. and yep the 2x4's should be okay with (2) layers of 1/2". With two layers be sure to stagger the joints.
