Elect. range....inst. codes

Could anyone give me a reference to the UMC or UBC or any other code regarding the installation of freestanding elect. ranges. I am referring to the clearance to combustible wall or cabinet ABOVE the cooktop level. I do understand the a freestanding range can have Zero clearance to cabinets BELOW the cooktop level

What you are asking, may be a regional requirement and you would do well to contact your local building authority.
However, some here may live in your area, but will never know, unless you say. City and State.

"I am referring to the clearance to combustible wall or cabinet ABOVE the cooktop level."

There are standard installation practices.
The range hood should, at a minimum, equal the width of the cooking appliance, and be 29" above the cooking surface, however, some sppliance MFG. may have other standards.

If by saying that the MFG recoments a min. of 4" to cumbustable, IE cab. to the side, and the owner wants it flush with the cab., Install it, maks a note of the date which you were overuled, mail it to the owner registered mail, return receipt required.
If you are speaking of the verticle wall behind the range, and there is no MFG. supplied stand-off panel, install it.

There are generally greater clearence requirements for gas appliance than elec., due to the potential fot "rollout" around large pots.

"I do understand the a freestanding range can have Zero clearance to cabinets BELOW the cooktop level"

There are also those free standing appliance which will employ a standoff panel, at the countertop level, to the rear, for venting an oven.

If you provide a model # I'll have a look at the PDF file.
