Ceiling Height for New Bathroom

I'd like to add a bathroom to an unfinished space on the 2nd story of my house. The ceiling follows a roof line that drops from 8' to 4' over a run of 6'. Does the ceiling drop too much to do this without adding a dormer? It looks like it's doable, but I'm not sure that it would meet code requirements.

Thanks

This is one you're going to have to ask your local permit office about. A lot will depend on the layout of the new bathroom. It only takes a few minutes to chat with the department head or his inspectors - and they will take all the questions out of your mind. Go in with a positive attitude - I've always found local inspectors (in 5 different locales to date) to be extremely helpful. They want you to succeed - it makes their job easier.

You definetly need to check with your code people. Codes are different all over the country, but I believe in most places there is a minimum of 6' 6". So definetly check with them. Good Luck

7ft minimum where I live now.... but.... I'm redoing my basement currently - the basement ceiling height is 6ft 9inches (old, old stone house and basement) - so I submitted my plans as the measurements actually exist (6'9")... The head of the permit office called me into his office and shut the door - he said he couldn't approve the plans as written because it would be unlawful ----- Then he told me that his inspectors do not carry a tape measure with them on their inspections - and I might want to resubmit my plans according to code............ As he repeatedly said to me: "Are you listening to me??"....

So I resubmitted - plans are approved - and I just passed the initial framing inspection.... no questions asked....
