We moved into our current 1930's home this past december, and since moving in, I have been doing a fair bit of exploring (large house, many renos over the years). The house is a 2 story with a room in the attic (3 stories in hight) plus basement (~2900sqft +basement). One thing I have noticed and wondered is why most of the main floor has a second ceiling added, lowering the ceiling hight from 12ft to ~10ft. I was up above the kitchen in the space between the two ceilings and noticed that the original plaster ceiling was mostly in tack, with only a few holes for the supports for the sub ceiling. There was no utilities run through the space (i.e. power cables or plumming) so I really don't see why the effort was put into reducing the hight of all the main floor rooms. Any thoughts as to why someone in the past would do this? I'm thinking of opening up a couple rooms to return them back to their full hight. Would be nice to have 12ft ceilings in the living room and dinning room.
