Soap making

I am looking for a way to use my old Dove face soap pieces to make new bars of soap. I have done it a few times in the past from instructions that I have gotten on the internet but each time the bars won't get hard. Is there something that I should be adding for hardness? Thanks.

Pressing them together and letting them dry out is the process. Some use molds, some just put the old sliver on to the new bar.

I vaguely remember my father doing it by melting the pieces in a pan then pouring in to a mold but I only saw him try that once and don't remember if it worked.
